Ballet
BDA teaches the Cecchetti method of ballet, notable for its solid, unmannered approach that translates well into any choreographic style. Our classes promote creativity as students develop their sense of artistry and style, with a focus on technical mastery of posture, coordination, and muscular control.
Annually, our eligible students prepare for examinations in the Cecchetti syllabus and our dedicated senior class comes to class twice weekly. At 12 years, interested students who have developed the necessary body, leg, and foot strength are considered for Pointe work.
We offer an assessment for experienced dancers to ensure placement in the best possible level.

Contemporary
Contemporary is a style of expressive dance that is a fusion of several genres, including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Highly interpretative in its choreography, contemporary dance often includes a natural focus on alignment, oppositional movement and raw emotions.
Contemporary dance stresses versatility and improvisation – unlike the strict, structured nature of ballet. Contemporary dancers focus on floorwork, using gravity to pull them down to the floor. It can include spoken word, intricate gestures, complex vs simple, athletic, movement vs. stillness, pushing boundaries, creative freedom, the absence of music and the use of media.

EXAMINATIONS
At BDA, we teach the Cecchetti method of classical ballet. Examinations are an important part of serious and qualified students’ training. The exam is similar to a regular ballet class, consisting of rehearsed exercises and a dance, appropriately set for the examination level. Exams are held annually in June and are subject to an additional examination fee.
Exams provide students with a concrete goal and a valuable assessment by a professional teacher from outside BDA. The examiner awards marks supported by written comments, and students also receive a signed Cecchetti certificate. With patience and hard work, an exam is a positive and rewarding experience for all candidates.
Students attending twice-weekly classes are eligible for the examination process, but each dancer is assessed for participation in exams on an individual basis. Our instructors carefully observe each dancer throughout the course of annual classes to determine readiness for examination. To avoid disappointment, examination expectations and decisions about exam readiness are carefully explained to ensure transparency and to help students understand the need for preparedness before the examination process.
Not doing an exam one year does not prevent students from moving up a level the following year or from taking an exam in the future.
